Prevention and care for altitude sickness

Many people assume that the climate in South America is warm, but in higher altitude areas such as the Peruvian Andes (between 2000 m.a.s.l. to 6800 m.a.s.l.), the temperature could feel very cold, especially very early in the morning and also at night. This area known as high-Andean due to its elevation could affect some people in their health with different symptoms, this disease is known as the “Altitude Sickness”, which mostly affects those who are not used to at this kind of high altitude zones. The lack of adaptation of the organism to the hypoxia of altitude or lack of oxygen, atmospheric pressure decreases with height, which affects the bioavailability of oxygen, since the pulmonary alveoli are not able to transport the same amount of oxygen to the blood before a situation of greater pressure. Altitude sickness could affect any person, whatever their physical condition, training or experience and if not treated in time can lead to pulmonary or cerebral edema.

To prevent take into account the following:
  • When reaching high places, the first thing is to rest.
  • Drink coca tea as the first remedy to begin the acclimatization.
  • Do not shake, or make physical efforts during the first day.
  • Eat lightly, avoid alcoholic beverages and tobacco.
  • Rest and sleep enough.
  • Stay perfectly hydrated

RECOMMENDATIONS:
To help prevent altitude sickness, such as acclimatization to high altitude places, we recommend that you arrive in Cusco (3400 m.a.s.l.) at least 1 day before your walk, so your body will adjust and adapt to the altitude.
The first hours in altitude are important, this first day do not consume large amounts of food since your body may not receive it because the digestion at altitude will be very slow, causing abdominal pain or nausea.
Climbing gradually and smoothly to high elevations is the key. Rest and enough sleep are also very important. Because the problems of altitude are closely linked to dehydration, we suggest you always stay well hydrated, once you arrive in Cusco you should increase the intake of liquids such as MUÑA tea known as Andean mint, or COCA tea , that will make you feel better and with more energy.
Limit alcoholic beverages and tobacco, caffeine and aspirin that tend to dehydrate your system.
Keep these recommendations in mind, so your trip will be more pleasant … Your body and your health will thank you!
